Sarah, Urban Teen {Virginia Teen Photography}

I hear from seniors parents a lot that the last time they had a professional photo of either the senior (except the boring school photos) or the family was when the senior was a young child (or even baby)! I know I’m biased because I am a photographer, but even before I opened my business I had numerous photo session for my children who are now 16 & 14. Obviously I use them a lot more as models now when trying new things out but I do think it’s important to have photos that actually accentuate your child’s personality and your run-of-the-mill school photos do not do that.

Snapshots are great! Do you think every photo I take looks like it was done by a professional when I’m just out and about with my little ones–who are way taller than me though? No way! Do I still print them all out? No. But I have them on my computer and on a hard drive backup under the theme, i.e. 6th birthday. But when it’s decent it does get printed out and added to a photo album!

But when I want to hang something up on my walls I take the time to plan something great with them, and you should think about it for your children too. Why wait until they’re high school seniors to have fabulous photos taken for them? I’m starting to photograph more and more teenagers for different things, but in a slightly toned down version of the senior experience! I still want them to say something about your child’s personality, but maybe there aren’t dozens of outfit changes or more than one location, maybe there isn’t professional hair & makeup, perhaps it’s not styled by a professional, but it’s still more than many of us do for the big events in our children’s lives: start of middle school, bar or bat mitzvahs, turning 13, starting high shcool, quinceaneras, sweet 16. Whatever the occasion we can come up with something fun for your child’s session!

Meet Sarah who enjoys longboarding! And notice the black Converse with Batman on one side and The Joker on the other (love those!).
